about

Improvisations, Etudes & Disturbances
A music diary by Tuomo Prättälä

I am working on improving my skills as a piano player and trying to write some new music and make some recordings in my atelier at the Cité des Arts in Paris but my audio interface has this annoying buzz and the washing machine next door is quite loud sometimes and so is the fridge and my piano chair is very creaky too and there’s this strange low hum that may be the subway? I mean I can kind of embrace all the other noises ‘cause that’s life but the audio interface is really bugging me. Anyway I need to work on my rhythmic stuff and technique and that means metronome practice and playing scales but the walls are so thin and I’m afraid of disturbing the neighbours so I mostly play with the sordino on which sounds really nice actually but then again I really need to work on my touch and sound and you can’t really do that with the sordino so sometimes I take it off and just bang on the keys but then I get embarrassed and I have to take a break or play something less annoying so my imaginary neighbors would like me again although no one has really complained yet and Sandra next door said she actually enjoys listening with her son who is so adorable but then again that was before I started practicing the really annoying stuff like scales and all that. However I’m working on new music with what I’ve got and this Nordic Salon Open Studio exhibition on wednesday gives me a nice urgent deadline that I have to meet and I always work best with a deadline. I have a few days and I need to record some music that would converse nicely with the videos and stuff the other Finnish artists are showing at the Cafe des Arts and I’m wondering if this will work or not but anyway I think the stuff is turning out pretty interesting and I’ve got a good artsy sounding title for this work and now I just have to write an introduction for it.
